Biocubes: Doing Science by Studying a Sample of the World

Ted Miracle, Fourth Grade, Endhaven Elementary School

Curriculum Unit (pdf)

Synopsis:

This unit allows students to explore the flora, fauna and factors that impact flora and fauna such as soil, temperature, sunlight, and moisture of several one cubic foot areas on the school grounds.  Students will take measurements, make observations and draw conclusions from those observations.  Biocubes will be placed in several locations on campus and data from the various biocubes will be compared and contrasted in order to learn how environmental factors impact flora and fauna.  Biocube data can be shared with the Smithsonian biocube project so that students can participate in citizen science.  Teachers can easily adapt the ideas in this project to fit their campuses.
