The Latino Scientific Mind: Empowering our Spanish-Speaking Learners in the Science Classroom

María Díaz, Science, Albemarle Road Middle School

Curriculum Unit (pdf)

Synopsis:

It is evident that there has been a largely increasing number of Latino/a students enrolling into predominately English speaking schools with limited to no prior English. Despite the evident increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELL), education still struggles to meet their needs. This curriculum unit addresses the barriers ELL students face in education towards academic success. Additionally, this unit guides ELL students through 3 CMS units with emphasis on visual learning. Students gain an understanding of content through a global perspective of content by comparing Mexico and the United States’ air quality and the influence of simple machines on Aztec civilization.
