Synopsis: The research part of this curriculum unit explores the origin of comics through the eyes of Scott McCloud; the importance of the ninth art in France and Belgium; two main schools in the Franco Belgian comic’s landscape and the advantages of using comics in a language classroom.
The instructional implementation part of this paper is divided into three parts. In the introduction, students learn, in French, basic terms related to comics with an emphasis on onomatopoeia and ellipses. In lesson 1, students discover common animal French idioms and represent them in a panel. In lesson 2, students read and analyze through comics two classics of French literature written by Jean de La Fontaine: The Crow and the Fox and The Cicada and the Ant.
