Synopsis:

In this unit, students will begin their study of the development of French nationalism as they investigate the causes of the French Revolution.  Then, students will be asked to analyze The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen and consider how it created the notion of civic nationalism in France.  Continuing with this theme, students will examine the symbols of France, including the French flag and Marianne as well as the development of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise.  To finish the unit, students will be asked to determine how Napoleon Bonaparte contributed to French nationalism.  In the culmination of the unit, students will create a mind map to assess their learning.
