Final Unit (PDF)

Implementing Common Core Standards

200 Word Synopsis

This unit has some pretty powerful language. In fact, this unit is all about language…and thought. More importantly how language affects thought- and vice versa. The most interesting part of this unit is that the ever-popular topic of immigration will be used as the tool to teach language and thought. This unit breaks down the language used in immigration policies and gets to the real meaning of things- how words can be used to influence public opinions. Not only is this unit breaking down language- it’s also breaking down social barriers and prejudices. Students will gain an understanding of what type of language affects their own ideas and take a sympathetic walk in someone else’s shoes.
