Abstract

The research and development of renewable energy resources is vital to the sustainability of the Earth for future generations. Coal, oil and natural gas reserves continue to be depleted at a rate faster than natural production can replenish. Wind, solar, geothermal and biomass offer cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy while reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions. Coupled with consumer awareness and conservation initiatives, these energy resources provide an answer for future energy needs. This unit allows students to explore these renewable resources as well as nuclear energy, although not considered renewable but provides an alternative to fossil fuel usage. It provides an opportunity for students to analyze their energy usage and environmental impact and to create a personal plan to reduce consumption and promote conservation.
