Abstract

Is it really art? It looks like a child did it! What is it supposed to be? I don’t know what it is! My dog could do that! Many children, even adults, don’t know what to make of Modern Art. We equate art and artistic skill with realism. Sometimes I am at a loss to effectively explain to my students why an example of Modern Art is really a work of art.

For an art teacher, it is important to be able to simplify the concepts of Modernism for students. This simplification begins with the elements of art, when teaching students to respond to these works of art.

My curriculum is full of activities that, I believe, will engage my students, create awareness of the Bechtler family, the beautiful facility that was built for the collection of Andreas Bechtler, and acquaint students with the art and artists of the collection. All activities relate directly to the art of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina.
