200 Word Synopsis

The unit, Why are we here?  Immigrating to Charlotte from around the World, will take Kindergarten students on a journey through the beginnings of the immigration process.  They will discuss their own origins and some of the foods and games that they like to play that have come from their countries of origin.  They will then read stories about children who have immigrated to the United States or spent time in a refugee camp and discuss their feelings about what they have read.  They will also ‘experience’ each of the countries described throughout the unit through PowerPoint presentations displayed by utilizing a Smartboard.  At the end of the unit, we will celebrate our differences in the classroom by playing games, creating art and singing and dancing to songs that are found in each of the countries that we have discussed.  Also, in an attempt to incorporate the whole school, we will host an International Night where we can continue to learn new games, songs, and dances as well as tasting some cultural food and seeing a fashion show that focuses on traditional dress of the numerous countries that make up our school.
