200 Word Synopsis

This unit combines the study of historiography and propaganda in order to create independent readers who will situate themselves in the historical field. There is particular focus on author’s purpose and perspective and the role of perspective in how the reader should understand a work. The general content covered includes the Mexican Revolution, First World War, and Nazism. Students will become adept at reading and identifying historical perspective and will be provided with a script of questions to use in evaluating the value and limitations of both primary and secondary sources. Kenneth Burke’s Pentad is presented as a tool for budding historians to use as they identify other individuals’ perspectives and critique their work.
