Abstract
When the word “culture” is mentioned in my classroom, it cannot be ensured a rapturous welcome. Many students study foreign language because it is “required” if they wish to graduate on a four-year college track. They are by no means convinced that a foreign language is necessary, useful, interesting or enriching. After all, is it not true that much of the world understands English, admires America and watches American movies? All too often the foreign language is a “subject” on the edge of the curriculum and the fascination of opening a window on a foreign culture is lost.
