Abstract

This unit will focus on teaching second grade students about the power of their own writing. Students will learn how to infuse and connect literature and experiences into their own lives, as well as reflect on specific events in such a manner that will help them become more in touch with society, culture, and self. The unit incorporates shared inquiry, the use of organizers and notebook journaling, and several strategies that enable children to discover new information as they write and acquire knowledge about their surrounding world. The unit can be used in any elementary school classroom, and it can be tailored towards different types of literature or subject areas. The unit is designed to teach students how to use their own writing to think more about what has, and is, happening in the world, and how to reflect on their own written words to bring them closer to understanding past and present events in their journey to better know themselves.
