The Brightside of Energy Consumption

Michelle Faggert, Science, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School

Curriculum Unit (pdf)

Synopsis

In this unit, students will learn how to become advocates for themselves and their communities while learning about the various types of energy that we use to power our society. In the process, students will learn about the consequences of energy production as well as the implications that this has on their everyday lives, especially as students from a low income, Title I school. This unit will also focus on incorporating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) education into an 8th grade science classroom to inspire students to think critically about solutions to the energy and environmental crises that are occurring in the United States and around the world. Students will be encouraged to focus on cleaner, alternative energy sources, such as solar energy and other sources derived from light.
