Synopsis
This curriculum unit will examine the system of apartheid in the country of South Africa from 1948-1994. It focuses on how people living in South Africa were classified into different groups and how the treatment of those groups differed. Students will examine life under apartheid by viewing photographs and hearing firsthand accounts of those who lived in South Africa during that time. They will also review discriminatory legislation enacted that enabled the white minority to main power over the black majority. Along with this, students will consider the figure of Nelson Mandela and his influence in bringing about the end of apartheid. Finally, students will create an infographic to share their knowledge gained during the unit.
