Implementing Common Core Standards
200 Word Synopsis
This unit is designed to help make this concept of multiplication a little more clear. This unit can be used for grade levels 3-5 as this is where multiplication concepts are most heavily taught in elementary school. This unit begins with a basic review of interpreting a multiplication equation as a comparison (multiplicative comparisons). We then learn to multiply (or divide) to solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison, multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Students will apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number.
This unit is aligned with the Common Core Standards for Mathematics in fourth grade.
