Synopsis
Stay Woke is a unit plan created to help students in 5th grade learn about themselves in depth. According to the North Carolina common core standards an essential tool for fifth graders is to explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text. This North Carolina standard gives me the flexibility to explore different historic or present events that have an effect on the perception of self-image within the media. The students will see a wide range of media clips, audio, visual, and written. This will help them connect the information with the stereotypes they have seen and even experienced that can potentially deter children from who they truly are within.
