Amy Stokes, Social Studies, Lebanon Road Elementary School

Final Unit (PDF)  Implementing Common Core Standards (PDF)

Synopsis

This unit is designed for fourth and fifth grade students as a way to integrate reading skills and social studies content. After completing the unit the students will be able to discuss the Civil Rights Movement in depth using domain specific vocabulary and events in great depth. They will be able to take the knowledge they have gained during this unit and express empathy when people are excluded or mistreated because of who they are. They will recognize their own responsibility to stand up against prejudice and injustice in the world by relating it to the Civil Rights Movement. Finally I hope that they will be able to make decisions about how to stand against injustice in their everyday lives and recognize their own biases, in hopes of making them better citizens.
