200 Word Synopsis

This unit was written to teach about the Civil Rights Movement by reading the novel The Help.  Not only will students focus on this novel, but we will supplement the novel with nonfiction, poetry, songs, discussions, and videos.  Because the novel is fictional, it is imperative to provide students with more background information so students gain a better understanding of this time period and the events that occurred.  This also provides students the opportunity to analyze a subject and events using different mediums. It is a nine-week unit that includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.  In addition, students will use 21st century skills.
